Saudi Arabia sits at the centre of the Arabian Peninsula, sharing borders with Jordan, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE, Oman and Yemen, and a causeway with Bahrain. That makes it a natural hub for a multi-country trip. Distances are big, but flights are short and frequent, and several land crossings are straightforward for well-prepared travellers. Here are four tried-and-tested shapes for a grand tour, plus the practicalities that make them work.
1. Gulf capitals by air (10–12 days)
Start in Riyadh (three nights, with a day in Diriyah), fly to Dammam and spend two nights in Al Khobar with a day across the causeway in Bahrain. Then fly to Doha for two nights in Qatar, continue to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in the UAE for three nights, and finish with two nights in Muscat, Oman. Every leg is a flight of about two hours or less with Saudia, flynas, flyadeal, Riyadh Air, Gulf Air, Qatar Airways, Emirates, flydubai, Etihad, Oman Air or SalamAir. Compare routes on Trip.com.
2. Eastern Province road trip (6–8 days)
Take the train from Riyadh to Al-Ahsa for the oasis and Al-Qarah Mountain, continue to Al Khobar for Ithra and the corniche, then drive the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain for two nights. Return to Saudi Arabia and drive south through Salwa to Doha via the Abu Samra border. Note that there is no road between Qatar and the UAE that avoids Saudi Arabia, so continuing to the Emirates by car means re-entering the Kingdom; most people fly from Doha instead.
3. The Nabataean route to Petra (9–12 days)
Fly into Jeddah for Al Balad, then fly to AlUla for Hegra and the canyons. Drive north to Tabuk via the oases, explore Wadi Disah, and follow the Gulf of Aqaba coast to Haql. Cross at Durra into Jordan for Aqaba, Wadi Rum and Petra, then end in Amman. Ferries between Aqaba and Egypt's Sinai coast make it possible to add Egypt, schedules permitting.
4. The Empty Quarter to Oman (7–10 days)
For adventurous drivers: from Riyadh head south-east to the Haradh area and take the 725-km Empty Quarter highway, opened in 2021, to Ibri in Oman. Explore Nizwa, the Hajar mountains and the wadis, then finish in Muscat and fly home or onward. Carry extra water and fuel and avoid night driving on the remote desert stretch.
Visas and practicalities

Entry rules depend on your nationality and residence, and they change; always confirm with official sources. If you will leave and re-enter Saudi Arabia, the multiple-entry tourist eVisa is ideal; see our visa guide. A unified GCC tourist visa covering the six Gulf states has been announced and the GCC says it will launch soon, but as of October 2026 there is no application portal and you still need each country's own entry permission.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a single visa for all Gulf countries?
Not yet. A unified GCC tourist visa has been announced and is expected, but as of October 2026 it has not launched, so you need separate entry permission for each country.
What is the easiest multi-country route from Saudi Arabia?
Flying between the Gulf capitals: Riyadh, Bahrain, Doha, Dubai and Muscat are all within about two hours of each other.
Can I drive from Saudi Arabia to Qatar and then the UAE?
Not directly. Qatar's only land border is with Saudi Arabia, so reaching the UAE by road means re-entering the Kingdom. Most travellers fly from Doha to the UAE.
